What is the best thing to use to contour your face? Should African American women use something very dark to contour?

As long as it is matte not shimmery, and cool not warm, you can use a darker foundation, eyeshadow, bronzer, etc... The reason for those rules is because anything warm will create round dimension, and anything shimmery will attract light. Neithe rwork since contouring is the illusion of a shadow which is more grey and cool due to a lack of light.
Most women with very dark skin focus more on highlights than contouring. Since the natural darkness does it already, the trick is to highlight and bring forth the bone structure. Use shimmery golds for yellowy/warm skin and shimmery pinks for cool skin tones. For pictures some even just use almond oil or anything shiny to highlight. For day wear an eyeshadow or illuminating product like those from Benefit or the like is needed. I love the Jane Iredale Highlighting Sticks. For super dark skin they have a gold/copper one, and for light to medium skin a light gold/pink one. The sticks can be used anywhere too, eyes, lips, cheeks, highlights, etc...
