Hi Angela,

Not all silicones are the same. There are many higher end brands that use medical grade dimethicone which is noncomedogenic which is the main concern when it comes to using a silicone based primer. The ones with the "good" silicone will create a nice slip and layer before your foundation to help it glide on smoothly, hide larger pores and help with the longevity of your makeup.

If you tend to have breakout prone skin, a water based primer may be better for you and is more cost effective than the medical grade dimethicone ones.

One thing to note though - for best results make sure that your foundation and primer are consistent. For example, use a water based foundation with your water based primer and visa versa.

I hope that helps!

My personal opinion on them is I prefer w/b. silicone feels nice on your hands but when it comes to applying it to the face I don't like the feel. it makes my face feel slick and oily. I used smashbox's silicone primer for a few weeks, and then switched to macs prep and prime and I like it tons better.

Silicone based foundations will last longer on the skin rather than water based. However, silicone can clog pores if you use it too much since it doesn't let the skin breathe as much. If you're looking to avoid or heal acne then look into water based foundations. Combined with a primer, the water based will work well.

To me, a silicone primer is more ideal as the lasting power feels much better to me, and makes my skin feels softer. It's down to preference for how it feels, as far as the impact on skin care it's not a huge difference.
