Hi all!
I am looking to pursue a career in makeup artistry. I have a question about the career.
I freelance doing makeup for theatrical shows, bridal, fashion photos, and for other events. I would say I have decent experience. I was talking to someone (I can't remember who, but they were in the beauty/hair industry) and they told me that you do not need a certificate to actually be a makeup artist/get discounts/attend IMATS.
I thought this was wrong information. I have researched various schools in Chicago, where I live, and they charge $10,000 + (not including your kit) to get training. However, the training usually lasts around 8 weeks and then you are awarded a "certificate." I have a few friends who are in cosmetology school/are hair dressers and they needed countless hours, tests, and state testings to get certified. I feel like how the makeup schools are advertised, this is not the case for makeup.
My question is 1. Do you need a certificate to officially be considered a makeup artist? and 2. If so, are the certificates valid everywhere?

Thanks so much! Do you have any schools you would recommend? I know there are independent schools that offer a certificate/diploma in only makeup. I know some bigger named cosmetology schools primarily focus on hair.
Any thoughts? Thanks so much for your help!! :)

I would search around in your area. I did and I found a very successful local mua that does "bootcamps" and then you get a certificate. I have done one and it was great. I also found a modelling agency in my area that has a certified makeup program that I am thinking of doing. You don't NEED a certificate to be a makeup artist but if you want to learn from experienced pros then it can be a good idea.

The purpose of the certificate would be you learning in a makeup academy and earning the certificate later to show completion. I got certified because I wanted to learn some new techniques. till now whenever I have done freelancing, nobody has asked for makeup certificated etc. so I advise yo build on a portfolio and get good pics to show your talent and skills.
