I find some of the best furniture for cheap at thrift stores. It's vintage and beautiful but inexpensive.

I have also been looking for a vanity table and don't really have the spare cash to spend a lot. Thats why I have been looking on craigslist. And I didn't even think about thrift stores but now I am going to start looking there too.:)

I got mine at bed bath and beyond for 150, it came with a stool ( which my lovely husband sat on and broke) but I love it. Wish it had more drawers but other than that it is my favourite piece of furniture!!

I like mairead's idea - build your own vanity or get creative with a writing desk, mirror and some makeshift drawers you can get from arts n crasfts stores - who says you need to buy a vanity when you can probably make on with the furniture you already own... just a thought.
