Good lighting. natural light is the best. know what angles flatter your features most. editing apps are good too! :)

I don't have any certain professional camera but yes there are apps depending on your phone. Samsung and iPhone both have some good photo apps like Foto rus or perfect 365 and also photo wonder or photo power.

I have an iPhone 4 and it takes great pics when I care to take good pics lol. But really any iPhone takes great pics ;)

Natural lighting helps. However a lot of people edit. Some editing apps are Instagram, insta editor etc, just search them on your App Store

Pixlr express is a nice program.. I see a lot of icky iPhone users lol =) but they seem to do a great job.

I just use my iPhone 4 s n it takes great pics without editing etc. as Lili said check some apps.
