Get two shades or whatever number of shades, and out them in rows on your eyes and blend them together with a blending brush. And do whatever else you want. Like eyeliner and mascara.

Sounds like you need Miss Jackie, she's a master of smokey eyes :) I can try to help though. Basically what you want is a graduation of color.
Apply dark eyeliner in a thick line, and then smudge it. Then apply your lightest shade all over the eye, all the way up to the brow bone. Then take your medium shade, and apply from your lid to a bit above your crease. After that take your darkest shade and apply it all over the lid. Make sure you blend so that there's a smooth graduation, and make sure you clean your brush or use separate brushes so the colors don't get muddy :) you can also apply more eyeliner afterwards if it suits you
