OK I have like dark brown I want a medium chocolate brown but don't know what developer I need 10 or 20 and every time I color it myself it comes out black.

10 only deposits color its good for going from light to dark. 20 will lift it a shade and deposit color. 30 will lift it more a deposit but can b harsh on your hair. and definitely don't use 40 thats for a crazy transition. I'd prob use 20 if I were you. I use 30 with bleach to get my hair white to deposit purple.
