Ok, so I have a friend who's a bridesmaid in a wedding. She has asked me to do her makeup. She wants a deep purple almost grey smokey eye. The eyeshadow she's using is the Revlon Colorstay 16 Hour in 525 Siren. The dress is a pretty plum purple. When I went to do a practice run on her makeup, I didn't have a blush that was perfect for her skin tone, and neither did she. I had the 10 Blush Palette from coastal scents with me. She is Beyonce's complexion. I tested the second blush on the top left of that palette to try and bring some color onto her cheeks a bit. But that color is like an orange. She loves it, but when I see it in florecent lighting, and not in her home lighting, it looks a little off. Usually for a deep smokey eye in that shade I would use a different shade of blush. But I'm having a problem finding one that will suit her complexion. I don't want her cheeks to clash with her eyeshadow or her dress. What color blush do you recommend? Also how should I go about telling her I want to switch it. This is my very first time doing wedding makeup for anyone and she's paying me for it. So I want her to be happy with it, but I don't want her to look off with her makeup. Suggestions please! Its this weekend.

Additional info: I'm trying to find one thats matte. She's not really into shimmer. A drug store one would be better. She is on a budget and she said she wants to buy the makeup. She just needs me to apply it for her.

Also I'm debating on what brush is best to use to apply her foundation. I could either use the stippling/duo fiber brush, or the regular standard foundation brush. I do not own an airbrush machine so I'm using liquid instead. Which brush do you suggest using for weddings. I'm good at doing makeup, but I've never done makeup for someone in a wedding. Also if it helps, Its a daytime wedding. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hey there,

You don't necessarily have to go with MAC, but a shade like Gingerly would absolutely work. It's the perfect neutral for her complexion. If you want the look for less, I suggest googling a dupe for that shade. I know there have to be some, since it's a pretty basic shade. I hope this helps! Good luck!

I would recommend a coral colored blush. It would compliment her skin tone and the purple eyeshadow. Sephora has a airbrush foundation brush that's great for liquid foundation. I got it on sale for about $17. I would let her know that you want to explore more looks to ensure she looks perfect for her wedding day. I hope some of this helps.

I do a ton of brides/bridal parties. First apply face primer (Loreal and Revlon's are good) I also love Revlon's Eye Primer and Brightener but if money is an issue just use the same face primer on the eyes.
Apply a thin coat of foundation with a triangle sponge (I get mine from Sally's). Then with same sponge apply a concealer that is 2 shades lighter than her skin tone under the eye down to the top of her cheek bone and any trouble spots (blemishes, around the nose). Then I put more of foundation on the back of my hand and use a large dual fiber brush (I use MAC's but I think any will do) and then stipple lightly another layer on top blending all together. Let it meld in for a minute and then use a powder to set.
Yes I would stay away from orange, I think a plum pink such as Loreal True Match Naturale Mineral blush in Sugar Plum would be a nice complement to her complexion and go well with her eye shadow.
Good luck! I am sure its going to look great!!

Oh and communication is key with any client. it doesn't mean it makes you look like you don't know what you are doing. Ultimately they are coming to you because you can do better than they would and they trust your opinion so just tell her what you think but ask her if its ok that you switch it up. I ask clients what their comfort level of color is and most are picky about their eyes, some hate liner underneath (they just can't get used to that look) so I tell them if they are going to be in pictures I suggest they have something there and use a light brown eyeshadow with a damp angle brush and go lightly under the lash line. Almost all clients are comfortable with it. I know its off the subject but I was just using that as an example of communication and how you can suggest things that you know is good for them when they don't.

MAC Gingerly would be a good colour for her. If that's too much try maybe Rimmel London in Amber? I'm not sure if it's still around but it's pretty close to gingerly. Other than that a toned down nude/coral colour would work well with ehr skin tone.
When it comes to suggesting a colour switch, pulling out the product in advance and pointing out how it is better than the previous colour with "it will enhance your natural skin colour without over doing it" or "this may be a better option because you it's less likely to clash with the dress in photos" etcetera.
Changing a clients mind is always hard though in the end she is paying you for a good result. No use doing makeup, especially for a wedding, where it looks good on the day but bad in photographs.
Also remember that powders can catch light in photos and show up the tiny and fine face hairs. So use as little as possible or try a face spray like MAC's Fix+
