No it's moisturizing for them, it's the nail polish remover that's bad and drying for them.

For some people, it can stain their nails a yellow color, which is why it is important to use a designated base coat!

Nail polish can actually protect your nails from tearing and damage, if you follow the right steps. Always put a base coat on before regular nail polish, so that the chemicals in the polish don't stain your nails yellow. Put on a top coat, and keep it for as long as you like. :)
However, be sure to sport polish free nails every once in a while--they need to breathe too!
Also, don't ever use acetone based nail polish remover. It is very damaging to your nails, and the skin around your nails.

I agree with Amelia. They can help prevent tears and peeling. When I don't have nail polish on, my nails are weak, and they break often. But when I leave polish on for a long time, they become much stronger. But just make sure, when you take it off, use a non-acetone remover. And moisturize a ton afterwards. ^.^

It's a good idea to give your nails a week of every couple of months I find, but more as a chance to properly moisturise them.

On the one hand it is true, but on the other one polish protects nails from scratches etc...
