I wanna know what you guys think. When is too young to be wearing make up? How much is too much?

My belief would be no younger than 13 years old. to start I think what would be pretty is just some eyeshadow, clear mascara, powder, light blush, and a nude or light pink lipstick and/or gloss.
I just feel if your complexion is clear you don't need much makeup. Less is definitely more when your starting out. I've saw a lot of young teenagers with caked on foundation/powder, too dark eyeshadow and dark eyeliner which only to makes them look ridiculous.

I agree with you Jennifer- somewhat. I think that if the girl (being like 13ish) knows how makeup works and she plays up her natural beauty, then it looks good. My friend wears caked on foundation and it actually clogged her pores and she got acne. Too much is when it's fake. Play up your natural beauty!

Depends on what your wearing & how much you use. I would advise you ask your Mom what she approves of. If it were me, any age younger then 16 is too young for makeup, i will only allow nude color lipstick/lipgloss. Yup i'm a strict Mom

I'm a college student, but I still find that girls should only wear makeup when they are 16 (preferably 18). This will prevent acne and keep your skin young and fresh. If you insist on wearing makeup I would go for a pencil eyeliner (no liquid. way too harsh and dramatic) and a pretty gloss (no lipstick - way too obvious). This is the best way to keep you looking awake, bright, and natural.

Kaitlin K., I feel that if you decided to join beautylish and want to learn about makeup do it!
If your mom says its okay. I started at 12 but I used very little makeup.

I started wearing makeup a few months before I turned 12 and it was just a little bit of pencil eye liner, mascara, occasionally I would dab on a little shadow, and sometimes a tinted lip balm. When you're young its better to start out more subtle and just enhance what you already have

Well, it's partially relative. I think that lipgloss is really fun for a kid to start with. Just something sheer, with maybe a little shimmer, and that can be good for a kid as young as 10. Mascara is the next step, and I would say 12 or 13. Anything more than that, you should really wait until you're 13 or so, and you need to talk to someone who knows what they're doing. I started wearing blush, eyeliner, and eyeshadow when I was 12, and it was a hot mess, because no one told me how to do it. That's the major thing, is that you need to learn before ever, ever wearing the real stuff in public. Because I know that I looked a fool, and no one even told me that I did.

I say have fun with lip glosses & nail polish, take it from an older person, let your skin breathe! Have fun practicing at home, but when you go out in public, take it easy..even some clear mascara would be OK.

Fifteen or sixteen, and even then, keep it simple. You don't need a full face.
Skincare routine, on the other hand? Once puberty really starts to set in.

I use concealer, mascara, lip gloss, eyeshadow, blush. Not much at all though. I very rarely use eyeliner. I'm 13. I feel like middle school is a good time to experiment and watch YouTube vids and really find what you can do and a fast and easy routine.

i started wearing makeup in middle school. and i say dont over doo it . you dont want to look like your trying to be older than what youa re. only enhance your beauty not cover it up especially when your young you dont want your face to start breaking out.

16 is a good age to start wearing light make-up. You should show off your young skin don't hide it with foundation, concealer and all that jazz. Use lipstick/lip gloss (nudes, pinks, corals and lilac colors) some eyeliner and mascara. Enjoy being and looking young. It goes by fast.

What age is appropriate for makeup is left to the discretion of parents. I started 10/11 with rules. Makeup at school was a not allowed by parents as well as school. Events/parties, weekends and even church was not a problem and also the amount and type of makeup I used was monitored.

I'm 15 and my mom always let me play with her make up. I love it. I started using it in 7th grade but I'll admit I used way too much. But it was my moms work to dress up and do that so that's all I knew! I think it just depends. Just try it out and you'll find what toylike and what you dont

I started using makeup when I was about 13. All I had was a brown mascara, bubblegum flavoured lipgloss, a natural eyeshadow trio and powder. When I was nearly 15 I started showing a huge interest in makeup artistry so I slowly started to buy my own makeup and for christmas that year I got a brush roll and a really colourful palette. However, if I had not been so into makeup at that time, I doubt my mum would have bought those for me. I'm 16 now and a lot of girls my age still cake their faces and have horrible skin, it's a shame really.

i started to wear makeup when i was about 9 or 10 years old never did me any harm, one of my of my little ones is ginger and has very long thick eye lashes but there so pale they are literally white so on rare big occasions i will put a tiny bit of suitable mascara on her and its fine x

I started wearing concealer and mascara when I was 11 and now I'm 14 and I wear foundation which just helps me look clearer and less stupid spots, mascara, liquid eyeliner, powder and occasionally some shadow. It looks fine and I have been studying makeup for 2 years now, I love makeup and faces shapes and just learning. I don't cake it on I like to highlight natural beauty, and cover up dark circles and spots. It's not a bad thing to want to look like you have clear skin :)

I don't think that there is any such thing as too young when it comes to make up. It's all about that person's interest. We need to teach young girls that only they can possess their bodies by empowering them to dress how they want. The tricky thing is to ensure a girl's safety along with her sense of body ownership, at which point do we put a barrier for the girl's protection? What kind of message does that send? Do we want a girl to be taught that how dresses and how she wears make up can have a direct correlation with her safety? I think these are questions that parents have to ask themselves. Obviously we want to protect our children from harm, but for me, I don't know if I could send the message to my daughter that is responsible for being attacked if she looks too old. Make up and dress have nothing to do with assault, it is never the victim's fault, always the attackers. Ugh such a moral grey area.... Anyways, I guess my point is do what ya want.

I strongly disagree with that. What happened to letting kids be, oh I don't know, KIDS?! I think they're growing up way too fast these days.

I began with lip gloss and worked my way up. once middle school hit, I started trying mascara and eyeliner (just pencil) and nothing more. I never used anything more than stuff for my eyes because I was blessed with really even skin tone and not too much acne (once in a while) so I didn't start using foundation/concealer until I was 17 and I just turned 18 about two weeks ago. talk to your mom, watch a lot of videos on tips and tricks and of course this amazing website. :)

Since 15, I think. I'm 12 and I love makeup, but I'm still too young for it. I think it's better later because you have to let "breathe" your skin. Hmm... Too much 20 or 25.

I think that there is nothing wrong with letting a 13 year old wear makeup as long it isn't part of some low self esteem "notice me" thing. I wouldn't want any child to start wearing makeup and build a complex to the point that they felt they needed a full face of makeup to leave the house or be noticed by boys. And I don't know about you guys, but when I was 13 I was very physically active, physical activity+makeup = skin issues! I say, talk it over with your mom and if she does okay you to wear makeup start with a lip gloss and just enjoy being you without a layer of foundation on your face!
