I use alcohol on all my powder / cream products and for lipsticks I just spray some alcohol on a tissue and use it to wipe away the top layer :) There's a bunch of YouTube videos on how to sanitize makeup as well!

But will that really protect against herpes/pinkeye? I didn't see any definite info online saying it would.

You generally use disposable equipments for STDS and infection. Place the product on a palette and once you've gone around the area that's infected, toss that disposable and grab another to work on the rest of the face. You want to contain it in one area, so avoid spreading it. Most artists would refuse the client if they have a concerning infection that might contaminate their kit. Also wear gloves as well, you need to protect your hands from the infection as well.
