I really love Real Techniques brushes from Samantha Chapman. You can get them here: http://search.ulta.com/search?p=Q&srid=S1-USWSD02&lbc=ulta&ts=custom&w=real%20techniques%20brushes&uid=106754040&method=and&isort=date&view=grid&srt=0 And you can just go to Ulta and buy them as well. Though if you go to Ulta, it's a little harder to find them. Because they're in such high demand, I guess. >.< I love mine SO much!!! I have all the kits, and am working on getting all of the separate brushes. :) They're fantastic.

Would you know what are the must have brushes. To start off with.?

The Real Techniques ones have the essentials in the kits, and they're pretty inexpensive. That's why I mentioned them. :)

I love ELF's brushes, EcoTools, Real Techniques, which is rather frequented in the Ulta stores lately. (My location has received BOXES of them! When I unload the truck every week, I get so excited!)

MAC's brushes shed, too expensive, and are only made up for the name. I have an ELF brush that outlived my 129 blush brush (MAC) with me taking care of them and cleaning them delicately and such.

Just saying...

My fav high-end brushes come from: Hakuhodo, Louise Young, MAC.

My more affordable brushes come from: Ecotools, Real Techniques, Essence of Beauty and ELF.

I'm looking to try: Suqqu, Shu Uemura, Rae Morris, and that's it for now until someone else comes along and boasts they have the softest brushes...  =P

Sigma brushes are really nice and they are more affordable than say MAC brushes. They are only available on Sigmabeauty.com. Drugstore brushes like ELF are nice when your starting out too and they are very affordable you can find them at stores like Target.

As far as types of brushes it really depends on what you find yourself applying the most. Powder and Liquid foundations benefit from different types of brushes and personal preference of course.

Since your just starting off I'd suggest picking up some of the basics like a shader brush for your eyes and some sort of foundation or contoured blush brush. Those are the main three I always find myself reaching for.

Really good brushes to practice on are drugstore brushes... EcoTools are found in pretty much every drug store (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Target, KMart, etc.) The brushes are very soft and like others mention they don't shed. Most comes in packs, so you get your money worth.

I would suggest you watch a lot of videos! Watch how people apply eye shadow, foundation, etc etc.

Having good brushes is worthless if the technique is not there. So watch videos and practice... soon you'll be a pro.

Then you can make your way up to more pricey brushes like Soma S. mentioned.

Personally, I think MAC is overrated and everyone only likes it because of the name. Sigma is great (if you can afford it) but if ur beauty budget is not that big...
1. ELF (but every brush is different so it might take you a couple times to buy a good one but hey they're like a buck each so who cares)
2. Eco Tools (awesome)
3. Love and Beauty (in forever 21, good for travel and the cute handels)
4. Loreal (my favorite kabuki)

I agree with Annabel on MAC being overrated.

In my opinion, long as the brushes are soft but sturdy they're probably fine! I have never owned any big name "high-end" brushes in my life and I get along just fine with my inexpensive brushes.

I love Sigma brushes, GOOD brushes make the difference believe me I had bought fake MAC ones off EBAY when I first started thinking it didn't matter but as soon as i switched to my sigma brushes I realised how wrong i was.
