I'm planning on applying to sephora and was wondering what it was like (atmosphere, work load, pay rate) as a cashier/ sales associate...thanks!

It's strange how they work but you don't have to know much about makeup to work at ulta or Sephora.I was always paid to do this girl makeup she knew nothing but sure enough she applied at ulta and got the job.I thought wow

And she still calls me to find out how to apply or how to do a look.

Yeah, and yet I have been to school for makeup and couldn't even get hired at ulta when they were hiring and they had it still listed as hiring a month after a applied and checked on my application multiple times. It sucks, and is kind of weird.

Brittany just keep at it and I also recommend applying at Nordstrom,Macy, ect you'll end up some where and end up doing some shows. It really doesn't have to be ulta or Sephora. In the makeup world it's word of mouth and who you know and your work, sometimes it gets frustrating but just keep at it.

Its all about networking ladies. Get friendly with the staff...especially those keyholders head managers. They receive hundreds of apps on a daily basis from corporate and walk-in's so it makes it real hard to go thru them all. And remember their names so with every visit it makes it that much easier to strike up a convo. And make sure you give them their name. After awhile you can drop the line that you wish to work in their store. These days you have to find creative ways to get yourself in the door and into the job you crave for. Sitting around waiting for a call back isn't going to cut it.

Store wise there really isn't too much around me, and I have tried a few other places like Carsons and Macys. I did just do someones makeup a week ago and she is going to try to hook me up with some people. It definitely can get frustrating but it is what I enjoy doing so no giving up here, thanks!

Also keep building your clientele, if this is what you love to do you have to do any outlet in this business to help keep you going.

Brittany, I was rejected by Sephora too, after a group interview. Whatevs. Who knows why, but they're missing out on us. Have you tried contacting higher up account managers for cosmetic companies? They hire for department stores too. Even though I know it might not be your favorite brand but Clinique has a website you can apply online at, I'm sure other companies do too.

Maybe they want retail experience as well as makeup knowledge?

Bree, definitely missing out on our lovely talents and shining personalities! Like I told Alma, there aren't really many makeup counters/store options around me and I have tried pretty much everywhere in a 45minute distance. And it doesn't help that I live in one of the hardest states to get a job in at the moment.

To help you out Paulina I stopped by my local Sephora store this morning since I was already in the area to ask my favorite associate about working in Sephora. The only question she wasn't willing to answer was the pay scale ( I don't half blame her either because I wouldn't want to release those sensitive details either). She said its basically no different from working any other retail job...customer service is vital and number one priority. Every store atmsophere is different and she described her's as one big party for the most part. Work load isnt outrageously stressful but it can become stressful at times when there are special events and customers are pulling on you from all directions seeking assistance. If you can't stomach the ugly and rude customers you won't last long she said. That's the dark side of retail...rude clients. Just remember that every store has its own vibe so before you apply just check out the energy of staff at that particular location to get a feel on whether or not you wish to be there. I hope I was of help to you. :) Good luck.
