Honestly it's just better to work for yourself. In the 3 states I've lived in since starting to do makeup, there really hasn't been any companies that just hire freelance makeup artists without having a portfolio or kit. Here's my suggestion, visit any and every wedding networking site that you can and sign up to be listed as a vendor. Many of them you have to pay for (TOTALLY worth it, trust me) but there are a lot where you can list for free. You can get wedding jobs that way. You can have the client send you a picture of themselves so you can know kind of what shades you need to buy, and keep doing that til you have your kit built up.

Just contact who you're hoping to work for, and let em' know you're interested.
Give them your phone number, send them an email of your portfolio if you want. It's all about letting them know you're interested.

Word of mouth really helped me. I started out doing my friends makeup, then weddings and then just networking. Buy as you go and attend makeup artist trade shows, like That Makeup Show or IMATS to buy stuff really cheap.
