Only wash your hair like 3 times a week and get shampoo and conditioner at a beauty supply store that is specially meant for red hair. It will be more pricey but it's better then having to dye it all the time.

Buy a dry shampoo and use that if your hair gets oily...focus on the roots, color depositing shampoo and conditioner (I use riveting reds from Sally's) when you wash your hair use really cold water and try to wait 2 days in between washes. (that's where your dry shampoo comes in) and you can use the color jamz red dye in between dyes to keep your red hair bright. Red hair is really hard to upkeep but its so fun and you get a lot of compliments!

I never used these brands, but I guess that your 'ex' hair colour is the problem. When I coloured my hair last, I went from dyed dark blonde to copper chestnut, and it isn't that bright and 'tasty' I was expecting for because oif pretty dark base, but it's nice. So did you bleached black or not? If yes, it could be the reason.(I guess it isn't naturally black)
If you colour your hair at home you need to choose a 9% oxigent (or 6% but hold more) because red hair need a pretty light base.
What about maintenance, red hair must be absolutely healthy to look nice and if colour 'leaves' you, use a dye with 1st level of durability every 10 days, or search for some shampoo with colorizing effect

When I had red hair I had the exact same problem, also, I used to use a vegetable gel dye by crazy colour in fire. That was AWSOME I'd redye it nearly every 2/3 weeks and also like the ladies above said, don't wash it too much. When you redye it don't use permenant colour there's no point is if it washes out. Use Semi permanent colour or the gel hair dye like I mentioned before. Red hair is hard to maintain. But I used to love it! Don't use permenant hair dye since using that all the time will damage your hair x

Red hair dye has big molecules that don't fully penetrate the hair. when you wash your hair, it minimizes the size of the color molecule and then at that time it penetrates the hair, thats why when you first dye it, the red looks so bright, and fades quickly and once its faded it stays in your hair lol best solution is to wash less. if your hairs oily don't use a conditioner but maybe once a week and was 2-3 times a week.

When I had bright red hair I only washed my hair once a week. I used riveting reds brand from Sally Beauty Supply; which has henna in it to refresh your color each time you wash it. Always use heat protectant. I hate the more orange toned red, so I went for a red violet, but that's just my preference. Even if it only says "red" on it it has an orange base.

Well honestly, I don't like semipermament. and maybe they don't hurt so much, but think that you will have to dye them more often, so there is no big difference. And using henna above dye doesn't make any sense, because it won't work. About washing hair as rare as it's possible... what's the sense to have awesome, shiny red hair but keep the dirty? And btw, if you don't wash your hair when it get greasy, this fat block pores, and hair grows slowly.
And one more imp thing, always read the instructions. Just by reading them, I helped my mom go from pretty dark brown do dark cinnamon blonde without bleaching, and don't expect the colour to be exactly how it should after 1st dye, you must colour your hair sane colour at least 2-3 times to get the result you wanted.:-)
