Basically it picks up any residual makeup that was wasn't fully removed from cleansing. I personally use it because my water is somewhat harsh and drying so I use toner to pick up any lingering mineral deposits. Depending on what the ingredients are they can also leave behind some beneficial goodies. A glycolic based toner for example can address acne prone skin.

Toner is a product used that helps tone your face. In other words, it helps make your skin tone all one color. Lets say if you have dark spots on your face, the toner will help those dark spots disappear and go back to your actual skin color. :)

I know lemon juice is a natural toner...I use it every night after I cleanse my face coz I hv acne..

@Tessandra...I'm sorry but I don't know where you received your bit of information but its so wrong that it made me laugh. My husband who is a cosmetic chemist even chuckled over it. An acid based serum or cream based can assist with dark spots and even out the skin.

@Karly R. yes some toners can address acne prone skin. Neutrogena has a great line of toners,along with Garnier. You can even use Thayers Witch Hazel...if you can get a hold of the aloe formula its even better as the aloe will also soothe the skin if you're using any topical products to take care of your acne as they can be quite drying over time.

I always value your wisdom but to say you laughed at someones misinformation came off as kind of snooty. I don't believe that was your intention but people get misinformed all the time, especially with all these crazy internet sites with outrageous claims of this and that.

@Kenzie...I was in no way coming off snotty but it drives me absolutely crazy about some of the stuff people post because of what they read off the internet or what someone tells them. And some advice that I've seen on here has been downright unsafe...that I won't laugh at because some beauties will go out and try it. That I will get serious about and point out consquences of x,y and z. And in regards to Tessandras post I then stated what items could correct dark spots so she received true information. I feel bad now because being snooty is not what I'm all about. :(

The point of a toner is to harden back your pores , remove any leftover dirt or makeup and bring your skin back to a ph of 7 and they actually do make toners that help brighten the skin

@Traci...but those leave a film behind that gives the appearance of brightened skin. I used one from Japan and as soon as I missed a day it was a wrap. Glow gone. It just doesn't have the power to correct skintone permanently. I wish...it sure would cancel out the serums in my stash.lol.

@ Shelley they actually have toners that contain vitamin C glucosamine and mulberry root that help with hyperpigmentation these do not lay a film down I own a few Aveda makes a good one and so does clarins of coarse the benefits are not as good as using a serum but the do offer some.

Being an esthetician I have never heard anywhere about toner helping even out skin discolorations. It brings your skin back to a normal ph level after a cleanse or peel.

@Shelley Actually there are several definitions of toner. If you look at toner products that is what they do. They are not usually meant to wash off any left over makeup, but they can cleanse your face. Also thats why its called a toner. It tones your skin. So I am not wrong, but its up to you if you want to believe yourself or yourself and I. And also my mother and step mother are Cosmetic Chemists as well, so I do know what I'm talking about. Oh goodness a toner is to help clean the rest of the dirt and make up off your face that your cleanser may not have gotten to.

@Tessandra...it was how you worded it. Like its going to cancel out all scarring on the skin. It merely assist but its definitely not a cure all. If it was the formulation would be super intense and instead cause more harm than good to the skin. My husband personally finds toners that advertise such claims as stretching the truth a bit because it takes a complete regime to lighten scarring not just one product (I.e. toner). Thank you for responding because I was waiting for a response. And I hope you didn't take offense to my original response as I wasn't trying to bash you in any way. :)

Oh definitely not! I always value others opinions! :) And sorry it took me so long to respond, it took me a while to find the thread again lol :) And you're absolutely right about that, its definitely not a cure all lol. And sorry if my wording mislead you, I was trying to get the basic point of it across :) And my aunts are the exact same way, so they only allow me to get one toner product thats from a Natural Ingredient product line :)
