Smoky eyes basically have a graduation of color (I like to use browns and blacks in mine). You can pretty much do any colors. I think they like best when kept monochromatic or in the same color family (for example, neutral shades, or a purple smoky eye. I'm not really a fan of smoky eyes that use multiple colors like green and blue at the same time)
Youtube is a great source to help you learn. Everything I know about makeup application has been from Youtube and practice practice practice!

Lynzie B pic's are of the true smokey eye its dark fade to light all the other ones that the other ladies are posting are the gradient effect style and one of them were of the banana cut style...Smokey eye has always been dark all around dramatic but for some reason everyone keeps mixing it up with the gradient look and I just don't no why.
