The term 'beauty guru'...

I was just reading another post and thinking about how much this term makes my skin crawl. Does anyone else find it strange? Especially to refer to yourself as one? I mean, if I'm doing a post on IG about one of my vids I do tag it #beautyguru but only because I know that's what people call it, but personally I think it's ridiculously arrogant and there are actually very few YouTubers who I would consider 'gurus'. Most of us just show people how we do our makeup... And most of us use very, very similar techniques... There's nothing guru-y about it. I wish the phrase would go away!! I think you need to be very thorough and give amazing advice that people would never have known before to be considered a guru, not just sit in front of a camera and put on your eye makeup. Blah. Rant.

I agree Kim, that word means more and I do find it a bit off setting the way it's been used as a mainstream throw around for anything.

I cringe over soooo many tags on IG. I'm all for being confident, but sometimes a female will have 20 tags...all proclaiming how gorgeous and amazing she is..lol

Hmm I have to somewhat agree. If you haven't reached the level where brands are sending you free stuff just to showcase their products you aren't a beauty guru. Nothing wrong with aspiring to be one but don't insult the real beauty gurus by claiming to be just like them.

Rozberry hahaha #pretty #cute #beautiful #instabeauty #model #cringe #cringe #youlooklikeadoganyway haha :) I know what you mean!

Jennifer I don't even think the people who get sent stuff are beauty gurus half the time. I got sent some stuff by MUA and I know bugger all - I'm farrrr from a guru. People who give helpful advice that you know you could ask any question and get some kind of useful answer are more what I would consider gurus. For example, Jacqueline on here! If I have a makeup/beauty related crisis I would hands down ask her over anyone! With Alma coming in close behind ;). YouTube wise I would say Wayne Goss is closer to what I'd consider a guru to be. I disagree with some things he says and does and he has a little tendency to contradict himself (don't apply powder with a powder brush... But then he applies powder with a powder brush in nearly every single other video haha) but he at least tries and is much more of a 'guru' than us who just basically put our makeup on to an audience.

Ahaha #youlooklikeadoganyway! Thatwas perfect, but yeah I definitely agree! With both beauty guru and lippie. Just call it lipstick or gloss!

The name Guru it's meaning is different from what people use it for now and I don't think their is a Beauty Guru at all..I've been doing makeup for 20 years does that make me a guru? No it just makes me an artist for 20 years lol but that word is thrown around like a new catch phrase and it just takes away from the true meaning in my opinion.

Wayne and Michelle Chan have taught me so much. Plus, they are so personable and possess a wealth of knowledge. I associate guru with brilliance, skill, communication, ability to relate and originality.

I agree with Rozberry!

I would rather them call themselves a BeautyGuru versus a Makeup Artist. I think a BeautyGuru has been has been redefined. When someone says that, you don't think of a professional, but a vlogger. A makeup artist is someone who is truly refined in their skills. So it doesn't bother me because the entire term has been transformed into something easily identified on the internet.

I strongly agree with you! I mostly use the word "beauty vlogger" because that's all they are.

Kim, I agree with you. I see a lot of girls too often say that they are going to become a beauty guru just bc they're starting a channel. I don't want to sound mean but every time I hear that I say to myself "what makes you a beauty guru?"

I've just been educated on the true definition of beauty guru by women I would have called beauty gurus. Now I'll call you inspirational makeup artists makeupologists :)
