I have had very minimal training in the makeup industry and therefore do not have a diploma or certificate declaring that I am a makeup artist.
However I still refer to myself as one and receive a lot of abuse because of it.
I believe I am an artist. And I don't feel I need a diploma to state that!!
Singing
Painting
Acting
Poetry
ect are all art forms. What did people do before these arts were available at learning institutes? Nothing! There were just artists because they were passionate and talented at what they do!
So if I don't want to work for a particular company should it matter that I refer to myself as an artist even without studying?
Do you ladies think that in order to call your self a makeup artist you need to have a diploma stating that you are, or do you just need talent and passion?

That's my thoughts as well Angel! Thank you for your import. I've had a lot of abuse regarding this issue. Even nasty anonymous letters posted to me from people studying. It's ridiculous and hurtful.

Thank you Angel! 💋 Means a lot!

That's exactly what I do! And I have business insurance and write receipts for every client and claim them at tax time.
I don't hide the fact that I have only had small amounts of training with an academy
It's people claiming I'm not an artist. I feel as though I am.

And even without training I find myself quiet busy!

I completely agree with you Nissa looking at your pics your definitely an artist and it doesn't look to me like you need any training but I also agree with velen that you should make it clear that you are self taught for your protection I would even make them sign a contract that states your self taught.

In my opinion it depends what your doing makeup for. For example to do makeup in the movie industry you don't necessarily need a certification you really just need connections. Anyone can claim to be a makeup artist nowadays and what I think makes you a mua is the talent, credentials, and experience.

Yup I agree with Angel, you don't need a certificate to be a makeup artist. just as long as you have talent & you can make people feel beautiful & know where to apply product, ex: contour highlight.. I'm a makeup artist :)

Because most people will assume you went to school when you say your an MUA.

I completely agree with Velen however that you need to make it clear that you are a self taught makeup artist. There are some people who take makeup courses and have no talent so that certification you get after a month or so really doesn't make you a GOOD makeup artist.

I wasn't angry or anything towards you Velen! I should have added a smiley face so my exclamations didn't come across that way! 😋
I appreciate everyone's imput.
I only do makeup for people I know
I'm planning on studying soon to get my credentials.
I just recently had some nasty abuse and wanted to vent and get other people's opinions.
The abuse I recorded were from some girls doing a beginners course in makeup and for some reason don't like me.

But I make it very clear to everyone I am self taught and only do makeup when people approach me. I don't advertise or anything.

I want to become a makeup artist and I have no intention of going to school for it.

I'd personally want someone professionally trained with creds if it were a paying job but no one could ever say your not an artist. Just like Velen said you want to cover your own butt

Nissa S.
Don't get me wrong, I Definitely want to study and become a fully accredited makeup artist. My issue isn't from a business point of view
I have had people attack me verbally saying I have no right to refer to myself as an artist because I don't have a diploma.
And I feel that I shouldn't need one. That was all I wanted opinions on 😀
But I appreciate it that so many girls are having my back and trying to make sure I'm protected either way :)
Just because my canvases are people's faces doesn't make me less of an artist ❤

Thanks Velen 😊
I might go ask about it!
And I'm going to remember that now! C.Y.A 😉

Oh I love that quote! Haha my new motto!
I had no idea, but girls studying in the beauty field can be very very bitchy! I don't understand the need for it. Doing makeup is the best thing I have ever done with my life! I encourage anyone to try it. I don't know why they feel the need to try and bring me down when in fact is be happy to help them 😔

😘 You babe are a gem! You're always popping up on mine and everyone's posts with advice and kind words.
We need more Velens in the world ❤

^^^^ She said it all! Do workkkk honey! Create a strong ass portfolio, and run a clean business! That's all that matters. If you are making a living off of doing makeup, you are a makeup artist.

I do have to say though, I think you should take some sort of course, or intern with a makeup artist who can teach you sanitation, contracts, fees, tax things... etc.all the non fun side of the makeup industry.

It's just talent and passion! I have not been trained by a professional. Yet I am still a better makeup artist than most of the girls around me who have gone to school. I love the craft. It's beautiful. I call myself a makeup artist. Because that's what I am. And I always will be one.
By the way, you have amazing skills. You really are an artist.

Thank you Jacqueline! That was exactly what I needed to hear!
They were very petty and incredibly nasty! They even went out of their way to find where I live to deliver the letter at some time between mid night and 6am!!
Which scared me more than anything!
I have definitely learnt to have a thicker skin. But sometimes it gets too you! They weren't the first to judge or attack me and I know they won't be the last
But because they know where I live this one kinda got to me.
I want the credentials.
I'm very ambitious! 😀
I don't want to be good or ok
I want to be great!
