It depends on the product! Mascara is typically 3-6 months, foundation is probably 6-12 months, and eyeshadows / powder products are normally 12-24 months :)

There's not one date for all makeup but eyeshadow lasts for ages but all I would be careful about are lip products, mascara, eyeliner and foundation and some products have dates on them also moisturisers

A good tip for mascara to tell if it's to old is if you still hear it pop when you take the wand out! If it pops it's got some life left in it. If it doesn't its not really any good

I remember reading an article a while back about these expiration dates on cosmetics. They tested 5 year old makeup for bacteria and it had a normal amount. I think it just goes to show you that if you take proper care of your products you can make them last! Of course, throw out any product if it begins to irritate you or if it starts to smell funny. From my own experience I've had an ELF eyeshadow palette for about 2-3 years now that's still going strong, and a Smashbox face primer (also 2-3 years old) that works just as it did when I first purchased it. As long as you take care of your things they can last much longer than the expiration date suggests. :)
