You lose the curl because you damage your hair. Continuos heat applied to the hair will damage it then the cuticle loses its ability to hold a curl.

Absolutely. I'm biracial and had tons of body and curl and after so much flat ironing only the bottom back of my hair curls now. its just like gross frizzy waves now. but I've also lightened it a lot as well and that contributed.

Yes, that's what happened to mine. it just got wavy rather than curly. that was a couple of years ago too, now its getting back to its natural state.
