I usually leave it on for 3 hours. It took aabout 4-6 applications to get the red tinge visible on my hair. I used to have jet black hair and now its more of a dark brown with red shades.
It may vary for your hair but you can continue application more times since it makes hair more healthy and shiny.

Lighter hair picks up colour more but don't worry you won't get shocking red roots, there will be a slight more reddish tinge to them. The colour doesn't gets evidently with first application itselt, you have to do it regularly till the color starts to show:)
Henna gives red colour, there's also indigo henna which dyes black but no purple that I know of:)

About henna:
I've seen hennaed my Indian hair a number of times. (My own is auburn with henna, which definitely shows up.) I don't think you'll see red when you look at it, but it has a gorgous red shine under lights or in the sun. Also, any lighter strands you have will have a deep red glow to them, at least after several hennaings. Love the look, but I'm not sure it's what you're after.
It deepens with each application and the best part is that it doesn't damage hair but rather good for hair:))
if you have any other doubts feel free to ask:)
