So I own almost zero.things of nail polish and keep my nails short, but I want to start making.my nails look nice, one thing though, I'm clueless, so to start I am most likely going to a salon because they have everything but I don't know what to ask for, what are acrylics, what is bad and good about them? Same with gel. And what would be good for a beginner who doesn't take much care.of her nails? Thanks =)

Acrylic is the whole nail is fake and glued on, gel is all gell except the tip. I would say neither because it puts weight on your nails and they file the base of your nail which is a big NO NO. Just put strong protection and growth clear nail polish.

I put gel nails once. It was a great experience and they helped make my nails a bit stronger. The only disadvantage is that the break from easy things like zipping up a zipper. Other than that, they were great, and very beautiful :)

Gel nails are fine I think, they last about two weeks and don't do any damage whatsoever when removed properly (don't pick them off), I would say go with gel because you can pick any color you want and it last two weeks! All it is is a thick nail polish that is cured for 30-60 seconds under and LED light :) I love gel nails!

I have my own nails with a no chip. Helps keep the length and look I desire with no tips and fill ins.

I use acrylics, but when one breaks I have to pick them all off cause I bothers me. Another thing I don't like is that they thin your nails SO much, and it kind of hurts if they're already too thin. I would do acrylic, but that's just cause I've never tried anything else.
I have short nails too, and went through the exact thing you're going through. I was clueless. But I'm glad I got acrylics (: they allow me to do my nails and they've gotten me into making my nails look pretty <3
