I am frequently stricken with bouts of dandruff and my problem is this: I use a lot of product and also occasionally experience itchiness up there so I am not sure if what I am seeing is product buildup or the result of dry scalp! Additionally my hair is fairly thick and when I try to apply any treatment it usually never reaches my scalp and just soaks into the rest of my hair! :( Any tips, tricks or suggestions?

I'm not sure about the dandruff. But if it is product build up, the best solution I've found is simply adding baking soda to your shampoo!

What? I had no idea baking soda helped with build up! Do you just put some in your hand with your shampoo before you lather up? That would save me from buying an anti-residue ahampoo!

And how often do you use it?

You can either put the baking soda in the shampoo bottle or what I do is after I put the shampoo in my hand, add some baking soda, mix it all up then just put it in my hair. It will definitely feel a little different because it doesn't lather as well but you'll feel a difference when your hair dries. You can use it as often or as little as you want

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo. I have thick hair and a dry itchy scalp, and that shampoo helps so much with itchiness and flakes.

Use a shampoo that's free from chemicals such as sulphates, parabens and silicones.

DO NOT USE BAKING SODA! That is a strong chemical which can actually increase dandruff as well as strip the cuticle from the hair cause excess frizz and breakage. Instead use tea tree oil. Apply it on your scalp when your hair is dry before you shampoo. massage it all the way to the scalp. leave it on for about 10 minutes then shampoo. The tea tree oil will remove any build up from product and it works as an anesthetic to treat and prevent dandruff.
There are lots of product on the market that use teatree as safe form of treating build up or dandruff.

Baking soda has been amazing for my hair. And it's a very popular thing if you've ever heard of the no poo trend. People don't use shampoo for the chemicals so they wash their hair with baking soda and vinegar. It's popular and has gotten a lot of great reviews

Apple cider vinegar 1 part vinegar, 2 parts water, use after shampooing, it gets rid of all the product buildup (:

Its also hydrating, and makes a good acne and acne scar mask. It smells terrible, but it does wonders.

Don't touch head and shoulders, I was told by my hairdresser that your scalp can become used to the chemicals in it and it will become less and less effective while leaving your scalp dependent on it - so swapping shampoos will make dandruff even worse! Try tea tree shampoo, it's pretty good, and when you wash your hair make sure you really massage your scalp to get the shampoo right to your roots :)
