I need to dress in the fashion of the forties as a mandatory class assignment. I have no idea what to wear and don't want to buy anything new. I don't have any older relatives I could borrow from either.

Go to Savers or some other opshop/thrift store and buy a knee length dress that flares out from the hips/waist.
Then go to a $2 Superstore an buy some immitation pearl necklace and bracelet.
Curl your hair and pin it close to your head then if you can find a big hat and gloves to match your dress.
Do subtle pin up makeup. Wear flesh tone stockings and maybe try to find some chunky heeled close toed shoes.
