I know this might seem like an odd thing to be annoyed about (and maybe it is, I've been awake a very long time now) but Maybelline tweeted earlier saying 'Do not, I repeat, DO NOT wear lip liner darker than your lipstick. Always match your liner to your lipstick'.
Is it just me that thinks a makeup brand should not be telling people what they can and can't do with makeup? I think people should be encouraged to experiment. The whole reason people judge others so much is because being different is treated so weirdly. Surely if someone wants to wear dark liner on their lips they can? It's only makeup! I tweeted back but no one has backed me up so far ha :(
I'm kimpants on twitter if anyone agrees you can find my replies there or go on Maybelline's profile it'll obviously be there too :)

You are so right!! And although Maybelline is making a totally valid point in my opinion, ha, THEY should for sure not be the ones telling us what (not) to wear! Ideally, nobody should ever tell anybody what to wear but sure, some looks aren't so hot, so we create "rules," but the fact of the matter is that everyone's choices are HOT because it's what they LIKE and what makes them feel good. Maybelline should be empowering women's choices, not guiding them. Sad to know it's one of my personal favorite brands doing this! I'd love to see everyone send them a pic looking fierce as hell in dark lip liner;) Great post, Kim!!

I'm sorry I don't have a twitter Kim. However I do agree with you, that Maybelline tweet is a little annoying. Makeup should be fun, creative & for experimenting (:

What the hell people should be aloud to do what ever they want that's just wrong to say to people I can't believe that

Thanks :) and to be honest, if people don't think it looks great... I don't care. I'll never listen to anyone telling me how I should or shouldn't wear my makeup. I'm not going to say I've never thought anyone's makeup was bad or laughed at the way someone had done their makeup and I'd give constructive criticism but I would never, ever tell them not to do it because its completely up to them and its just not important, it's not affecting me! I'm sure no one else really thought anything of the tweet when they saw it, but I just kind of thought, since when do Maybelline make the rules on what lip products people can wear?

I love doing ombre lips and it requires me to use lip liners darker than my lipstick. I agree...now I'm peeved. :/

Kim S.
Yes, Shelley I love ombré lips! When I saw it I was like wtf? Ombré lips are so popular at the minute!

You look great in that picture, and I totally agree! Makeup is all about experimenting!

When you do an ombre lip don't you use a darker liner. maybelline needs to update their info. plenty of people do exactly what they said don't do.

I completely agree Jacqueline H, well said. I think using a darker liner can really make the lips look nice and full and add depth. And even though there are rules about colour theory and application techniques... People don't have to stick to them! I think for a makeup brand to be posting these 'rules' is ridiculous.
I now vow more than ever to buy some illamasqua products! I did a post a while back about why people pay for certain things from certain brands. I've never tried anything by illamasqua but the idea they represent about being creative with makeup is worth supporting and I think I'll have to splurge on some products!

I feel like complaining to the company, hoping they send me vouchers, buying non matching lip liners and lipsticks with said vouchers, doing as many 'bad' lips as possible and tweeting them a pic of every single one!! Lol

I actually have sent them a message on the website expressing my rage lol. I love complaining and having my say! :/

People should be allowed to wear makeup how they want to. It's good for a makeup brand to ADVISE on how to weat makeup, but they shouldn't try to dictate the right way and wrong way to wear it :)

That is terrible! I totally agree with you. It should be slightly darker to add depth and create a fuller lip. These brands make me laugh x

Guys, I think they are suggesting, like sometimes it looks awful but yours looked good Kim!! But guys it's just a tip take it our not.

That tweet was in bad taste. They shouldn't be telling ppl what to do.
May 6, 2013
Kim S.
Hailey K. I know, I'm sure it was only meant light heatedly, but I think such a big brand should think about the way they're wording things before they post. Someone had replied talking about how they saw a woman yesterday wearing black lip liner... They should know it was going to invite comments like that and it doesn't look good coming from them

And thank you btw :)
