I put this in the beauty section because I'm stressing out. I really want to know what career field I want to get into. Something really fun, has a lot of consistent work, like doing makeup on models or a image consultant? I don't know. I don't want to travel away from home too much. I live in California, San Diego. could I get into doing makeup on models for magazine photo shoots? What career are you in?

Hey kaitlyn I'm in beauty school for cosmetology and I was way more into esthetics than hair really and everyone in the city every school I visited told me to begin taking cosmetology courses because it covers the basics than work my up to advanced classes for esthetics and makeup. I have about 4 months till I graduate and after this I plan on taking an esthetics course at Aveda than mac pro makeup classes. The more you build on to your portfolio and the more licenses you have the more people would want you like my instructor says "if it was my wedding and I need my facial, makeup, and hair done I want to get it done all at one place" hope I helped (:

Yes you did help lol thank you =] I'm not going to do hair, just skin and makeup. I was thinking maybe getting into a medical spa, I really want to help people with their skin health.

That is so awesome! well than you should definitely go to a school for esthetics first. You can than take advanced classes like laser courses and such but you would need your cosmetology (in your case you aren't doing hair so..esthetics) license atleast one of those two. Go into esthetics before makeup because esthetics will cover a little bit makeup a long the way and make courses aren't to long most esthetic schools are like 4 months really.

But since you said makeup on models and stuff you should look into a freelance makeup school and I'm sure they would teach you a lot more than mac pro classes because they work with more names like in nyc most makeup schools work with makeup forever. Plus this way your able to do theatre, bridal, and runawat you'll have.more options.

Best way to start off is to work on a makeup counter. That way you learn about different products, different types of customers etc. plus you get discount on their products so you can start building up your freelance kit. Try assisting established makeup artists on shoots, this is a really good way to gain experience and meet new contacts. If its freelance you want to do, its going to take quite a lot of unpaid work at shoots and shows to gain the experience and photos for your portfolio. In the meantime, start up a website showcasing your work, get some business cards and get out there. Bridal makeup is a great way to earn money on the side too!! Being a makeup artist is a wonderful job. But its bloody hard work getting to where you want to be. Youve just got to keep going :)

I'm. an Image Consultant which is one of the things you mentioned. I started by checking the AICI website and got in touch with some of the seasoned consultants who teach classes. I already had a degree in Fashion Design so I didn't need too many classes. then you have to do some free work to gain the experience, create a website, blog, go to networking events and meet people / prospects.

Thank you everyone =] I'll be taking the 102 esthetics and makeup artistry program at bellus academy. so it's just skin and makeup. I'm just waiting on my dad to pay his taxes and get the copy from 2011 so I can set up financial aid and ask them about grants, then I can start school.
