Thought I bring up a topic to talk about, I think we are always quick to not like something if it doesn't work in our favor ugh it's bad or nope it's not magic so throw it away lol..what makes a foundation cakey? Have you ever wondered about that?, is it the products fault or is it your own? What do you think? Could it be your skin, could it be your application of the product? What do you think?

For me its defo when I apply too much, the same foundation can look great when I use less.

I think it's probably the way it's applied. I usually put on my foundation with my hands and it looks fine but if I use a stipling brush or some other brush, I use like 3x as much product and it looks REALLY cakey!

I think it cab have alloy to do with how dry you're skin is as well. Proper blending.

I agree with the ladies. A big part of why a foundation is cakey can simply be the tools used to apply it, maybe too much foundation is applied or maybe even the setting powders we choose to use creates a cakey look. Most of the time the product is not to blame!

Sometimes it's just the product itself a lot of products are good but there are some not so good quality products as far as foundation goes I think most of them are really good but if you feel it doesn't work for you or you don't like it there could be many factors as to why its not working for you 1 it could be your skin type if you are or oily and use a Foundation for very dry skin then it's not going to work well for you and will be super greasy. 2. If you use a silicone primer and then use a water based foundation that is not going to stick together very well it could be your not using product better light so if you have a silicon primer you should use a silicone based foundation then it will work a lot better together and your foundation will look better and stay a lot longer 3. if you have dry skin and don't exfoliate or moisturize then almist any products are going to stick to those areas and show up patchy. Or vice versa if you use way too many products or moisturizer before you apply foundation and don't let it soak in then when you go to put on your foundation its not going to absorb and will just slide around and you will get streakiness and it won't stay on your face... if you try to powder on top of that its going to look like a mess.
So I think we should all make sure we are taking the right steps before we use our makeup and also how we are applying them before we kick a product to the curb, I know I a am guilty of doing this and once I found out what I was doing wrong I absolutely loved the product and it worked wonderfully!! :-) thanks Alma for starting this topic, I totally agree with you and hopefully we all find some tips on how to get a better outcome from our makeup and maybe find we end up loving a product we threw in a drawer never to use again!  B-)

Thick or cheap powders are the key for my cakey face. I apply it well, but it leaves that unnatural finish, even when I don't use much. I use a silica based powder, and now it looks more natural. I apply my foundation with my hands to feel for the right thickness. I can't use a foundation brush, because I do what Jenna does and put too much on.
But this is a interesting topic! I think it can go 50/50 with products and technique!

Not following a good skincare program. Exfoliation is vital. A clean canvas allows for great results.

Thanks ladies for sharing and I agree with all of you,I think the more we explain are reasons and information the more we teach people the Ins and outs of beauty technic versus being so vague on our answers to a lot of new Beautylista here.I've notice a lot of questions not truly being answered for those who really need answers and we need to step it up a notch.I greatly appreciate the time you guys took to answer  :-)

I think definitely your skin type also. The condition of your skin very much so effects how your foundation will look esp if it's not the right product for your skin type.

I have foundations from different brands: loreal, nyx, shiseido, mufe etc, and I think that what makes a foundation cakey is your skin, the away you prepare it and of course, the quantity of product applied.
My skin is combo, but a little dry too and I always hydrate first before any foundation. Skin is a complex organ, exposed to many things. If you don't give her the supplements that it needs, it will be ugly. if you put foundation on a dirty and ugly skin, the foundation will be more visible.
