Yes, many fashion designers and critics say that. But vertical stripes can also make them be distracted at certain areas. Like your constantly following the stripes. Black also makes you look wide

I think this varies from person to person, but have found vertical to suit me best. I also love my white capris and have never felt wide in them and they compliment my figure. Experimenting with a mirror and selfies may be of some help.

Yes. It's not just clothes though, a wall painted with vertical stripes will look taller and a wall painted with horizontal stripes will look wider, its an optical illusion. Depending on your body type different thickness of stripes will have an effect too =]
