You are on the right track but maybe like go for the really curly look but then lightly brush it out.

Big rollers and setting lotion!! Play around with the placements, but put them in with the setting lotion when your hair is damp and then on the the lowest setting of hair dryer go over them. Best to use a diffuser for minimal heat damage and also read the back of the setting lotion because some say to dilute with water. Then set with a good flexible but strong hold hairspray :) oh and ps:I would google roller placements to get the look your going for

The Bigger the roller the more wavy, the smaller the roller you get more curl. I would test different sizes also :)
