Hi Monica! As a new artist, expect to spend at least 5+ years building your portfolio. This means, yes, working without compensation outside of pictures for your port. You cannot get paid commercial work without a portfolio no matter how talented you are and no agency will even talk to you without one. It's just the way the industry is. Best of luck to you!
