Hair doesn't like color?

Let me start by saying my hair is very healthy. I haven't tried to color it in about a year. It is very straight and fine, but I have a lot of it. My natural color is hard for me to describe. It is a darker brown, but with a kind of cool ash tone to it, if that makes any kind of sense. In the right light it looks like a warm gray type color.

Over the last couple of years when I've tried to have it colored, it just won't take. Black is a no go, it goes this weird green gray color. Red does better, but really just warms my color up a bit, usually just looks about the same. Last time I had highlights done it took almost an hour and a half to get good results. The stylist wasn't completely happy, but she didn't want to try to process my hair any longer. I didn't use to have this issue, I just don't get it.

Anyone have any insight? I've been told some people's hair is just like that. That doesn't make me happy, lol. I used to really enjoy coloring my hair and now it's just disappointing.

Do you bleach your hair before you colored it?

Hormones? Have you had kids? My hair is way different after having my 1st, and now that I'm in the middle of making number 2 my roots won't take color at all!

You might just need to leave color on to process for a really long time?

Rachael, it took an 1 1/2 to lift color for highlights and that only took my hair to a reddish blond, I'm half scared I'd fry my hair beyond repair before it lifted enough to color effectively.

Lindsay, I have had kids. I am getting older though, maybe hormones has something to do with it. Congratulations on #2! How exciting!

How long is safe to leave on? I rather like my hair, I think a wig might be itchy, lol!

Make sure before you color there is no products in it, serums, mouse, hairspray.

Try dying your hair when it's a day old or two, some hair takes better to dirty hair. If you want to go lighter try L'oreal Hicolor at Sallys

That product works wonders, I went from black to bright red in one application. They also have them for highlights.
