Curling hair with a flat iron? HELP!

I've seen people do this, but for some reason I just can't get it down. What am I doing wrong??

How do you move your flat iron? If you want to curl with it you have to get a section of your hair, put the iron on it and turn it around a couple of times while you go down with your iron.

I can't use a curling iron to save my life. My mom is a cosmetologist and has shown me multiple times how to use it, I just can't get the hang of it. Anywho, this is what I do.
I use a 1" straight iron, put it like I'm going to straighten my hair and just turn it whichever way I want my curl to go. I just continue to turn it as I pull down. Don't clamp it too tight or it'll be too tight and hurt when you pull it down. Good luck.
