So, my eyes have just recently been opened to the existence of steam flat irons and I would like to purchase one...any recommendations/tips on what to buy?? I'm not big into hair tools so I don't really know where to start or what brands are good.

I've only heard great reviews about the l'oreal steampod. It's a bit pricey but the hair looks so shiny and smooth afterwards, it might be worth it.
