My dermatologist recommended me to use a skin lightening/bleaching cream for my uneven skin tone. I'm considering it but I'm a little paranoid. I have dark skin tone and I'm scared if I use a lightening cream it will make that one specific area a lot lighter than the rest of my skin and are there serious side effects? Should I consider buying one?

Did the Derm recommend a specific item? It I's odd that a Derm would not either provide a product or script..or even give you a specific item to purchase OTC or through their practice's store. I'm not fond of Derms who defer to OTC as their sole answer..especially without specifics. Dark complexions have to be more careful than fair skin with these kind of creams.

The Dr. should have also discussed potential risks involved with some ingredients (even if they are considered debatable in their view or are commonly used) and given specific usage instructions.

I'd begin by getting a new Dr..seriously. Very odd and unprofessional behavior. Certainly of no help to you as now you find yourself with no specific answer or direction. Do you have a photo of your skin tone issues?

@Rozberry J I emailed him and at first a while back he prescribed me retina a cream but it didn't work, so now he's recommending me a bleaching cream which he said through email. And yes I do have some pictures, I will post it later on I don't have it with me atm. Thank you!

@Rozberry J my dermatologist recommended me Hydroquinone 4% cream he told me to apply it on the dark areas twice daily for three months, he also listed all the side effects etc. Have you heard of this cream? Is it effective, what do you think? Thanks:)

Well, normally those physicians who use this ingredient often start at 2%, but 4% is indeed highly effective, but you need to watch you don't create new patches. You want skin's tone to be even as possible.

I do have both knowledge and experience in such products. You need very little product and use must be restricted to no longer than 3 months for now and discontinue use after that...visiting your Derm.

There is another option.
A few actually. Non Hydroquinone Lytera has proved safe and effective so you may want to try this first, twice daily. It is pricy, but a very large pump-container for your value.

I'd also begin to use a Vitamin C serum, AM and PM. Timeless Skincare has one for around $20 as does Baby face, which a friend turned me onto recently. This should really boost and brighten. I'll link those below. I'd keep my serums in the fridge to extend shelf life.

This will safely brighten the entire face, provide cell communicating, antiaging ingredients and can pair well with Lytera.

You can also use Lactic Acid and dates..make a cream mask to aid skin in soothing..adding moisture to counter any drying products. zthis works well for me.

Liquorice extract is also helpful.

In addition, Once or twice a week, Okay Pro X Nightly Micrpeel with CeraVe PM (Niacinamides) atop after peel has dried should help.

If all else fails, I'd go with my Derms recommendation for a short period, but I wanted you to know that you do have some options you may want to try first. Broad Spectrum Sunscreen is a must. Alba Botanica, CeraVe AM, Paula's Choice Resist tinted and Elta MD tinted are all effective. Resist is my favorite.

Being diciplined and ritualistic about dedicated skin care is what will make the difference. You can soothe and aid lightening skin by mixing Plain Greek Yogurt with a hint of Manuka honey for a mask...to use when relaxing at home. Hope that helps and best to you!

@Rozberry J wow thank you this is great information! I did check the products you recommended some are just a little out of my budget :/ I will try a vitamin serum and check out the Olay Pro C Nightly peel. If all else fails I will give the hyrdoquinone cream a try, and for that if I just apply it to my dark sports can it create more dark spots and make it even darker or even too light, that's what I'm nervous about.

Use it sparingly, in small amounts and only on darker areas..no more than 3 months..and then visit a Derm. The natural video and Yogurt and a hint of Manuka honey will also help soothe and brighten. My best to you.
