Hi Girls!

I'm in need of a gentle but effective exfoliator to get rid of some of the dry flaky skin on my cheeks/between my eyebrows. It's getting drier and drier here (especially with the heating on) and I would like an exfoliator to use a couple times a week just to keep the dryness at bay so my skincare can really sink in to their full potential. However, I know that many exfoliators can be quite harsh/drying on the skin so do you have any good recommendations??

Oh! and I'm willing to try both drugstore and high-end (things you find in Sephora) products, though preferably under the $40 range.

I highly recommend the Boscia Exfoliating Peel Gel, it's gentle enough to use every day and my skin always feels so smooth after using it. It also acts as a physical and a chemical exfoliant so you're getting the best results from it (:

@Alexis oh that sounds good. A peeling gel? So do I leave it on my skin and wait then peel it off?

No, it's a gel that you work around the skin and while you're doing that little balls of dead skin will form. Once you're done working the gel around you just rinse everything off (:

@Alexis that sounds exactly like what I need! Are the ingredients harsh or drying?

Melanie, not harsh or drying at all. Like I said, it's gentle enough to use everyday (:

I would steer clear of St Ives as it can really damage your skin. I like the Dr Brandt peel gel which works the same way as the one Alexis suggested:)

It's not inexpensive.. But I love Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant. My skin is sensitive and this doesn't irritate my skin and makes it so soft. Another one I like is Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Gentle. Though the price tag seems steep, you only need a little bit and you only need to use it once or twice a week.

Gel exfoliators like the Boscia Peeling Gel are not actually chemical exfoliants. They provide mild abrasive action but that's about it. They function mostly by utilizing a film-forming agent at a certain % concentration which will ball up on itself as you rub it around on the skin. It is important to look at the ingredient list of what you're using on your face, rather than just the claims.

The Boscia Gel for example does not have any PH adjuster, so even if the plant extracts it has could function as chemical exfoliants (which most of them can't), it's extremely unlikely that the product is at the correct PH for them to work that way.

Also important to note is that brands like Boscia love to load their products with essential oils, which can seriously irritate your skin.

You can get a better exfoliant at a better price by going with a brand like paula's choice, or Alpha skincare; they are two brands which are great about properly formulating their exfoliants. Olay also has one called the overnight peel.

An alpha hydroxy acid is probably best for you assuming you don't have acne, so any of the three brands I mentioned would be worth a shot.
