I know that "best" is subjective and what works for one person may not work for another but I've been wanting and trying to revamp my routine.
In your opinion, what are the steps for the best nighttime skincare routine? Do you find that serums and masks really help your skin?
Also, could you use a mask everyday? For example, could I use a mud mask one night and then the next night use a hydrating mask, the next a sheet mask, etc. and just switch up what mask I use every night as part of my routine?

One thing I don't understand isn't a part if everybody's skin care routine is "double cleansing" - removing your makeup and then cleansing your skin! Your cleanser will not clean your skin properly if you have makeup on (in my opinion of cause). Every night I will remove my makeup with a cleansing milk and then I go in with my cleansing gel.
I also absolutely can not live without a god serum, I really love serum. I'm using the Clinique Smart serum at the moment and I'm loving it! Its expensive but worth it. My skin looks and feels much better.
The one single thing the made the biggest difference in my skin was introducing an aha exfoliator twice a week. It has made my skin look and feel smoother and radiant.
I use masks but not everyday. I think they are great as an extra boost in your skincare once or twice a week.

Sabrina what aha exfoliator do you use? I see that word everywhere on this site and Paula's choice and finding one that works for me is so overwhelming!

I only do masks once or twice a week but I will set aside a good 40 mins and do a few in a row lol. I'll use an exfoliating one to get the dead skin outta the way to make sure the next one is really making good contact with my skin if that makes sense. Then I'll go in with a purifying or deep cleansing one to really clear out my pores. Then I do a moisturizing mask to bring back any lost moisture from the other masks lol. It's a lot but I think it really makes a difference and I can get them all done in one shot instead of setting aside time every day or every other day. I'll post a pic of the masks I've got in regular rotation atm:)

Oh Dana I agree its super overwhelming, I was so lucky to get Kitty's guidance and she helped me find one for my needs. I use Paula's choice 10% weekly AHA treatment in liquid form. Its in a little blue bottle!

I would do a fast YT or Pinterest search of Asian skincare routines (specifically South Korean) its very interesting and they all take amazing care of there skin. Of course you don't have to buy the products they suggest in the videos you could substitute with something more accessible. If you were interested in the products they're are some great Asian sites that ship Internationally. The Asian skincare products and ingredients are light years ahead if what the you.s does.

Thank you so much, ladies!
Angela, I'd love to see what masks you have in your rotation (:
Sabrina, I double cleanse as well! I've been looking for a good serum to add to my routine so I'll look into that Clinique one (:

The 'best' skin care routine is simply one that doesn't involve
Fragrance
Irritants
Solvent Alcohols
That's not subjective. Above mentioned has been shown to contribute to cell death and creating issues for the skin beyond what we can physically see.
Products need to be formulated correctly!! Especially for someone with sensitive skin :(
Today's market has about 3 different brands you can pick with your eyes closed.
What you feel your skin needs is the 'subjective' area.
There is science behind skin care and I am a brutally honest person, and I will say there is a lot of B.S products on the market, with a lot of B.S information.
A lot of people prefer 'feel good, smells nice, fancy pancy' products and today's market takes advantage of that. Anyone who wants to talk true skin care knows where they can find me.. :)
That being said...
-In your opinion, what are the steps for the best nighttime skincare routine?
That is completely subjective to what you feel your skin needs, as mentioned. Serums tend to yield some of the best results due to the fact that the molecule size of serums allow for a much better penetration into the skin. If you are going to dive into great skin care, serums are the way to go. Serums are fantastic for oily skin, and work fantastic for dehydrated and dry skin.
+Do you find that serums and masks really help your skin?
Properly formulated skin care, absolutely.
-Also, could you use a mask everyday? For example, could I use a mud mask one night and then the next night use a hydrating mask, the next a sheet mask, etc. and just switch up what mask I use every night as part of my routine?
As mentioned, subjective. As long as you pick properly formulated products, try it and see how it goes.

Thank you so much, Kitty! I've been looking into serums a lot lately, I've been using the Ole Henriksen Truth Serum in the morning and just picked up a sample of their Invigorating Night Treatment serum (:

I am combination with occasional spots. I used to get them more frequently but my skin care has helped!
I use philosophy purity in the morning. I use the Ole Hendrikson truth serum and the eye cream from that line. I then use Clinique dramatically different gel
At night I remove my make up with the purity cleanser. I then cleanse with my Murad acne cleanser with my Clarisonic (only a few times a week) at night I use algenist eye cream and a heavier moisturizer
The masks I use are origins trouble mask (white tube) and the resurfacing mask (pink)
The pink tube is new and I LOVE IT!!
This has helped my skin tremendously. My pores are smoother and my skin tone is more even. The truth serum is a wonderful product for problematic skin

ALSO the cover FX invisible sunscreen is so great! It feels like a silicon primer which is great for makeup prep. I dislike the feeling of sunscreen lotions being dragged across my face. This has helped me consistently wear SPF.

Thank you! I use the Truth Serum, Algenist Eye Renewal Balm, and Clarisonic as well. I've tried the Purity cleanser but I really hated the smell so I stick with my Origins Checks & Balances (:

Double cleansing is essential for me. Removing that outer layer of makeup/sunscreen/whatever really helps your skin get clean.
A chemical exfoliant is a must for me.
A serum/moisturizer appropriate for your skin type. Maybe you don't need moisture per se, but getting antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients into your skin is always important to its proper functioning.
Anything on top of that I consider extra for a nighttime routine. Granted, I use a lot of extras but the best routine would include those three steps, imo.
