I need tips on how to get the perfect contour because mine either don't match the other side and are uneven or the just turn out cakey.

What I do is look straight on in a mirror and apply my contour product in the natural hollows of my cheeks visible from the front. Then I turn my face to either side and gently blend upwards in a dabbing motion.

It depends on what brushes you are using like @Alexis said and also the tones of contour shades you are using I think a perfect contour would be not orange and not gray a good in between combo for example I love using a bronzer first and for that I love using the Sephora bronzer in Maldives with a small powder brush so it gives an amazing bronze and shades to the face sweep it in a 3 shape temples and hair line halo of the cheeks and jawline then I like to go with the shade and light contour palette by Kat Von D I mix the gray toned shade with the middle shade and just a touch of the darkest one and repeat the 3 step but lightly because you don't want your contour to look too harsh using a contour brush I love using the one by real techniques I hope this helps let me know please :)!

Use a dense like buffer brush to buff it out. And to really move the product. Or else it will just sit there. Try the elf contour brush it's really dense and only $3. And will help getting a even line , when needed. Or I will use my foundation brush I just used.

To start with I do a very diffused contour which I then intensify just under the cheekbones. then I take a colourless powder and bake a line under my contour, this makes it sharp and perfect.
