I've never contoured or highlighted before, so any tips or suggested products would be really helpful in getting me started.

If you know your face shape, you can find pictures on how to contour for your face shape.
I really suggest looking at that because some people contour and highlight to slim their face but the technique they use just makes their face look wider.

I also suggest, if you're using a lighter colored highlight under the eyes to only go about half a shade or one shade lighter.
when you're using a contour and highlight the contour can make the highlight look lighter so if you're using a shade 2 shades lighter or more it'll just look way too light especially in photos.

I'd be sure to use a cool toned contour shade.

avoid setting with HD finishing powder or powders that are mainly silica in general.
don't extent your contour too inward. it should stop at around your pupils

Really, Aurora? Where your eyes end? The outer corner? Is that a good rule of thumb for most faces? I think I've been going in further than that. I'll have to be more careful.  Thanks!

I agree with Aurora, on the highlighter not being too light and also the contour placement. Ending at the outer edge of the iris is a good general rule as it is the area underneath the highpoint of most people 's cheekbones. You're trying to visually lift the cheekbones. That's why highlighter is usually concentrated on the high point of the cheekbones. Contour underneath the highpoints is just emphazing it even more. Now, taking the contour a lot further towards the mouth gives more of a slimming effect. Which in my opinion, isn't flattering on those with long or thin faces as well as women of a certain age who are losing volume in ther cheeks like myself. Girls with round faces and or fuller cheeks would again, in my opinion, benefit with this technique, although the more contour you use on the face, the harder it is to keep it natural looking.
