Plopping would help with volume, or using mini duck bill clips at the root while it's drying.

Maybe try scrunching with your head turned upside down every few minutes while it dries naturally?

I agree with Kiara. Also check if the products you use have silicones as these tend to weigh down curls.

Thank you! My curls were once very bouncy at the top even on my longer hair but for some reason it has changed. Just want to get it back to a state where I can leave it down and curly :) thanks again! I'll give that a go.

I think it does that as you hair gets longer and your curls weigh your hair down. you could try using a diffuser to blow dry. I'm not really sure if that will help but it's worth a try

Any suggestions for getting the root of my hair to go back to curly. It used to be curly on top but lately it only starts curling mid way leaving me with a flat top. I tend to let my hair air dry when I leave it in it's natural state but I could try different washing/drying methods if those help.
:) thanks!
