I have acne and have for awhile, one week my skin is mostly clear and the next it's going crazy! I got put on birth control to help because I have polycystic ovarian syndrome but also to help with acne, it takes about 6 months to actually see an improvement though and I just started :( any suggestions until then?? all suggestions are appreciated, thank you (:

Don't pop your pimples!! I did that and I completely regret it. Wash your face regularly. Don't exfoliate every day. That'll irritate your skin. If you are going too, do it two or three times a week. Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water that alone can help acne. Also don't stay up too late and try not to stress a lot because that can cause acne as well. Also, expect breakouts before your period. This one is hard, but try not to eat too many sweets, especially chocolate. Chocolate can cause acne.

Thank you Rachel (: it's hard not to pop them sometimes honestly but I restrain myself. yeah I always know when I'm getting my period because I start breaking out a few days before. thanks for all the advice! I will definitely be using it.

You can certainly exfoliate everyday but it's dependent on what kind of exfoliation you do.

I get my exfoliation from daily application of salicylic acid products and it buffs away the skin with my Foreo cleansing device when I wash. Scrubs/abrasives are things your skin really doesn't need.

How would you describe your skin type?

I use the olay fresh affects kit currently, I have tried a lot of different things. I don't know if the scrub that comes with it is too harsh for my skin though

I have some holy grail Olay products, but the Fresh Effects is loaded with irritants..fragrance, citrus, mint...things that can be difficult for sensitive or acne prone skin.

I'd recommend,a gentle, hydrating cleanser and follow up with a topical acne treatment that can penetrate pores, not only treating, but reducing breakouts such as Paula's Choice BHA gel. I find to be a gentle way to chemically exfoliate and many of her BHA products come in travel size and samples. Her toners are specifically designed by skin type and needs, with no irritation.

A nice weekly treatment you may want to try is Olay's Pro-X Micropeel. It says 'nightly', but I use it twice a week. CeraVe PM has niacinamide which is great for your skin and will moisturize lightly without clogging pores.

Since you are prone to acne, there a few things you can do to help reduce breakouts.
On your complexion, avoid waxes, mineral oil, coconut oil, citrus, lavender, denatured alcohol, and fragrance. Moisturize in light layers rather than with heavy, waxy creams. I'd also use a breathable fabric pillowcase, such as pure cotton, changed every 3rd day and pull my hair up away from my face when resting at home.
Dairy and meat have hormones naturally in them, which for some can trigger hormonal acne. You can try pulling back on that and also avoid meats and dairy with *added hormones*. Green Tea with leaves from Japan are my favorite, such as Teavana. This naturally reduces inflammation and fights bacteria. After drinking a cup, you can steep your used tea bag in a cup of hot water and let cool to make a rinse to splash your face. The bags are also soothing for the eyes or to soothe an inflamed area, such as the chin. If you feel you need to boost moisture, you can seal in CeraVe PM with an acne friendly oil such as Jojoba or Evening Primrose.

Sunblock is a must when using BHA's.
Best of luck to you.

(I''d also ask my Dr. about trying oral nicotinamide.)

So I have same problem- with the PCOS. I agree with a lot with Rozberry, pillow changes, hair back, etc... avoid hands on face, be conscious of if you touch them at night, conscious if your phone touches face (keep it clean any phones or things touching face)... products used. I think you can use anything pending-- when you rinse it off use a clean wash cloth to rinse off, not hands and splashing, clean towel to dry off, and I personally am a fan of clarisonic for washing face. However I have been using face clothes when I'm being lazy and haven't noticed a change in breakouts.

When I get a random one or two, I immediately use neutrogenas 8hr spot treatments. If they are small and not deep I use salicylic acid one, if larger and deep then benzoyl peroxide one.

When they get heads, I do use the tools to pop them and immediately treat them and they are gone before the end of the day, or before the morning. I clean the tools with alcohol. I have no scarring.

For moisturizing I am using burts bees sensitive skin as it has aloe and it is light.

For a scrub I use st Ives. But that is once or twice a week, I find I don't need it that often.

My acne has SIGNIFICANTLY improved over the year.
