I find carrying individual lipsticks cumbersome- I prefer palettes. I have a Viseart lip palette and the other palettes I have are Vuesets that I've depotted lipsticks into.

I second what jenni said. if you have a formula you love you can depot them into palettes and keep using them more conveniently. the main issue is having to carry around or sort through tons of lipstick tubes on location. the formula/brand and colors will come down to preference in what you like working with and your usual customer base.

Not at all, most lipsticks will let you roll them all the way up, cut them from the base, and then smush them into place. From there it's easy to scoop with a spatula.

I prefer lipsticks and then I put them in an empty palette. I know, MAC makes a palette where you can put in the lipstick insert. (I have the duo palette and have two lipstick inserts in it although I'm not home to take a picture of it)
Now, you don't HAVE to have a bunch of colors. I would just get a few standard colors and then buy things like MACs lipmix and from there you can mix and match or come up with tons of shades.
When I depoted my lipsticks, what I did was I twisted it up all the way, cut it and then scraped out the lipstick within the container and used that to put in the palette. Then you put the part you cut off and put it back in the lipstick tube so you can use that on your own.
You'll put the lipstick in the palette and you CAN use a hair dryer to melt down and smooth it out but it'll get messed up once you start using the palette on clients

You're very welcome. My palette is pretty much full of MAC lipsticks honestly. I have a couple from wet n wilds megalast line but other than that it's full of MACs matte, retro matte, amplified and satin formulas which I find to be the most versatile but I believe I do have a frost(the shade "angel") and cremesheen(the shade "creme cup") which quite a lot of fairer brides like.
But as I mentioned, the lipmixes from MAC are great, they come in a squeeze tube and have a lot of product. You could easily get the primary colors plus a white one and a black one and be able to make any color. They do have two neutral nudes which can make it easier to make a nude lip whether you want it more pinkish, mauve, peachy etc

I agree with Aurora. I'm not a makeup artist but I have a palette I customized of my own lipsticks that were blue (melt draft), red (Mac ruby woo), and yellow (a limited edition mac color with a bit of mufe flash yellow) and I mix my own. I also have a white (mufe flash cream) and black (melt bane) in it for darkening or lightening. But it's super great for making any lipstick you already have into the perfect one that matches what's in your mind.
