Knotty hair for hairstyle half up and half down.

Hey guys. I really like my hair half up and half down, but whenever I have it like that it always gets knotty in the hair band. My hair is between shoulder and hip length. Cause my hair is very very very very thick, I also have these very thick coloured hair bands which I sometimes use as well. Any tips on making it less caught up ad knotty.

It could just be your hair type, but my suggestion is to braid it so it doesn't knot up.

I know this might be a silly question but do you brush your hair right before it goes into the pony? And also use some leave in conditioner and hair spray to keep the hair in place rather than knotting up
