Hi Lara - yes they do need to be sharpened. For me I can use any sharpener, but it took a lot of the color of too. I would recommend getting the sharpener that goes with it

Yes I sharpen it with my sephora sharpener that has a big hole. but as Monica said, you will loose some of the colour when you sharpen.

I find these (as well as my eye pencils) easiest to sharpen when I pop it in the fridge for an hour or two before I use the sharpener. I just think it gives a cleaner, better shaped tip with less smearing.
