I'm starting a cosmetology program in November and I'm super excited!
What advice can you give me for starting? What info/techniques/etc. should I absolutely know before going in? Any websites, apps or youtubers/instagrammers I should check out?
Thanks for any help!
Rachel :)

You don't really need to know anything beforehand but it's good to have some background knowledge. On YT, SalonEducation is a great channel for the basics.
As far as advice : miss the least days you can and don't be late - those hours add up and I know that at least in my state we couldn't work on actual clients until we had at least 250 hours.
Also keep in mind that depending on what school you're going to attend that if it's a big "name brand" school like Aveda or Paul Mitchell they are going to train you to work in one of their salons. You won't learn other product / colour lines really, as well as other ways of dealing with clients.

Thanks Baileigh! I'm going to a local school who thankfully understands hectic schedules. There's no way I could go if I HAD to go full time because I can't quit my job. It may take me longer to finish than typical, but I'm excited nonetheless:)

Stick with it! a lot of people drop out of cos or miss too much that they never get their hours. it really doesn't matter what you know going in. if you have a chance to intern or get a salon job as an assistant, take it! also know that doing hair right off the bat after school probably isn't going to happen. most salons will start you as an assistant with cleabing, shampooing and all the dirty work and then slowly worm your way up. it's hard to build clientelle so unless your committed to it, there's no point. check out behindthechair.com and their Facebook page.

I was in a cosmetology esthetician class! It was super fun! I didn't go in knowing much. Your teacher will teach you the things you need to know:)
