Red hair help and Splat hair dye?

Hi Everyone! :) I have a consolation later tonight at a salon about getting my hair dyed a bright red but I personally would rather pay someone to get it to that color then save money keep up with at home if possible. Does anyone know how splat hair dye works or is there another brand you would recommend/ any tips? I'm also curious on how I would touch up my roots at home after the fact? I've never actually dyed my own hair so any help is appreciated!!

Personally I found that Splat was kind of drying on my hair and my hair is pretty resilient so I think that's saying something. For touching up at home you may have to bleach your roots if they bleach the rest of your hair to achieve your desired color. Bright colors usually involve bleaching unless your hair is already light.

I always get my hair professionally bleached because, from my understanding, it's very easy to mess up and/or damage your hair when you're doing it yourself.

Bleaching roots is relatively easy as long as they're not too long.
the issue is that when they're longer the roots that are closer to the scalp end up processing faster due to your natural body heat whereas the longer part of the root will process slower so it would end up darker. So, you may need to cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic bag and use a hair dryer to help the longer parts process as fast.

I'd suggest sticking to a 20 developer. I have black hair and use a 20 developer. it takes longer than a 30 developer but that's good because it gives me more time to bleach the rest of the roots so it processes more evenly.
try to avoid bleaching around a fan and such because it can cause the bleach to dry up and stop processing. At the salon I was at we would get a spray bottle of water and just spray some on to help prevent the bleach from drying up.

since you're going red you don't HAVE to tone the hair unless you're going for a very blue toned red in which case putting over brassy hair can result in a neutral or more warm red than expected so you want to use a toner of some sort prior to putting the red in that case.
also, apply the bleach a few centimeters down from the roots, as bleach processes
it tends to expand and move up anyway and if you apply it directly on the root closest to the scalp, it'll process and expand and get on you scalp and may cause chemical burns but if you're using an on-scalp bleach you don't really have to worry as much

Oh, and avoid overlapping too much because if you overlap you run the risk of over processing the previously bleached hair and that can end up breaking off. overlapping a tiny bit is okay but I usually apply it thinner so it'll dry up and stop bleaching before the rest of the hair anyway. I overlap a tiny bit because sometimes the roots from before become.. not as toned and look more golden ish so overlapping gets them to the platinum and makes it easier to tone when using purple shampoo

Also! STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM SPLAT IF YOU HAVE ANY DESIRE TO RETURN TO A "NORMAL" HAIR COLOR IN THE NEAR FUTURE! It stains the cuticle and is damn near impossible to get out. I just recently had to do it for a client and 687$, 3" off of her hair, and 4 bleach appointments later...

Thank you all for the help! I just finished my consolation with her and am taking it all into consideration as of now! She told me that she could give me shampoo's w dye in it to prolong and also pravana red dye to maintain it til about 8-12 weeks til my roots start showing to where it bothers me, as she doesn't recommend I try that on my own. So I'm thinking I'll end up going this route to try and save on all the costs. Thank you all so much again! Any tips for maintenance is appreciated also!! :)

Try to wash your hair with cold waster, and use sulfate free shampoo.
