Hey everyone so I used to have the thickest hair in the world but lately it's been falling out in handfuls every time I run my fingers (or a brush) through it (or sometimes just randomly). I don't know what could've happened because I feel like I take really good care of my hair. I only use heat 1-3 times a week (and I usually use a heat protector) and when I would bleach my hair we did it super safely (with olaplex or sometimes we'd just take months lightening it slowly). plus, I haven't bleached my hair in a long time (and I'm not planning on dying it again for at least another year). I've heard things about stress causing hair to fall out. is that true? This year has been incredibly stressful for me, and not to mention I've had some serious appetite/diet changes (I only eat carbs). Would those be more important factors than using heat and dye? is there a way to regain thickness? thanks so much.

1st thing you need to do is go to a dr or derm and find out from them if it's a medical thing... there are so many different things it could be

Is a dermatologist just for skin or can they help with hair too? thanks so much.

Stress can cause hair loss! Your eating habits play a part too, but stress mainly is a major factor. Def get checked out by your primary care doctor, but it's most likely the stress. Try and find ways to de stress yourself in the meantime - yoga, painting, etc. find a relaxing hobby you enjoy. Also try drinking more water and eating more complex carbs and proteins. Complex carbs being things like peas, beans etc. and proteins like fish (omega3s are great for hair skin and nails!) and lean meats.

Yes most derms that I know deal with hair loss.

Stress and sudden diet change can definitely play a BIG part! Try to eas on the stress and try some relaxation techniques. Also, eating only carbs is not a very good idea for the body. Our body relies on these main things to function properly and stay healthy: Carbs, Fat, Protein. Must also have daily vitamin intake which you get from fruits and vegetables. Just follow that guideline and try to remove as much stress as possible and your hair should be back to normal :)

I agree, see a physician.
Many derms specialize in hair and nails. In addition to a physical, request they run a blood panel. Although stress can cause loss, often sudden hair loss is a deficiency or endocrine issue...such as the thyroid. You certainly should not delay.

Stress and diet definitely are factors that could be causing it, I think your best bet is to go see your doctor.

Most likely it might be your diet affecting your sudden change of hair loss. I have the same problem as you. I had lost 50 pounds and all of a sudden lost a lot of hair. As long as you still healthy and still exercise it'll get better.

After you rule out any thyroid or hormonal reasons for the hair loss, look into products like Nioxin. It is *not* a hair growth product (anything that claims to be is bogus) but if you use it as instructed, it will stop the hair loss. I went through something similar 2 years ago. I was almost disappointed when my doctor found nothing wrong, because there was nothing to "fix" since stress is... well, stressful! But I can say the Nioxin helped tremendously. It can make your hair feel a little icky though, so be sure to use deep conditioning treatments as well.

I have lost and enormous amount of weight recently and have experienced the same thing. I have seen several doctors, had multiple tests and all of them have put it down to not enough protein in my diet. I have taken all the supplements you can imagine and none of them helped and my blood tests showed that I wasn't actually lacking in anything that those supplements would help with so they recommended I save my money. I continue to take my women's pregnancy multivitamin even though I am not pregnant but because it has more iron and some other vitamins and have increased my protein intake and it seems to have slowed down. It is so heartbreaking, I hope it stops for you soon xox

Use no heat and do not dye it, lower stress levels, eat more protein and see a dermatologist

Definitely your diet. Carbs only give you the energy.
Hair is 91% protein, so you're not getting enough protein if the new growth is not strong enough and just falls out or breaks off near the roots.
Iron and protein are essential for good hair growth although you'll usually get iron from something that's got a bit of protein.
