I have heard of a "straight perm" and apparently you use the perm gel stuff but make it straight instead of curly (if that makes sense) but I heard that it is permanent. So like every time my hair grows I would have to redo it? Or does it fade away in a year like a normal perm?

Depends on which kind you get, the Japanese one is permanent and you'd have to do your roots.
The Brazilian or... Maybe it's just keratin is semi permanent and you'd have to redo it every few months.
The Japanese one is stronger and I've heard about that one more.
You'd have to prevent tucking your hair behind your ear or wearing your hair up for a few days to prevent lumps and such sticking around. I believe they put the solution in and then straighten it

There are a lot of things that do this, but you probably mean Keratin treatments. It's more permanent than a perm, but you do still have to redo it every now and then. One of my sisters has been getting keratin treatments for almost 15 years or so at this point, and overall, her hair has been getting straighter and smoother without any effort the more she does it. Does that make sense? I'd recommend talking to your stylist to see what they recommend for you and your hair.

Adding to these ladies comments another alternative is a relaxer, which will permanently straighten but you will have to get touched up to the roots every six weeks. However of all three I'd recommend the Brazilian/Keratin "blowout" it keeps the hair sleek straight without too much damage.
The most damaging would definitely be the relaxer, which is a "straight perm"
But please look for a reputable salon, there are a lot of salons that claim to be using the right stuff but in fact use a more damaging solution. I'd check Yelp for reviews and don't go anywhere that seems to good to be true

I'm not sure which is safest but you need to be careful because some of them make your hair fall out, it happened to my mum and a friend
