How do YOU choose your blush?

This may be a dumb question but I don't wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis (but yet my makeup stash overflows lol).
I love the look of blush on others but I don't know what looks best for me. I know it should look "natural" but how do you decide to choose from a rosey tone and maybe an orangey tone? I want to step out of my comfort zone and use more colors but what should the blush color match?
For example I just bought a violet color...should the eyeshadow match?...should the lipstick? so many questions! lol
thanks in advance beauties!

If I'm doing a look that uses tones of the same color, such as purple, in my eyeshadow and/or lipstick then I go for a purple or pinky purple blush. If my makeup is really bold and dramatic, such as a smokey eye and/or bold lips, then I use a more neutral blush so I don't take away from the main focus (:

I've been wondering this for the LONGEST time. I always pick random shades, not knowing how to choose one that suits me. Following this thread!

I tend to go by season. fall/winter I wear deeper plum and violet blushes. summer I wear pinks, peaches and bronze colors. I'm also very cool toned so I always lean towards that. if I do wear warm tones then I use a warm tone blush.

Get a blush the same color that matches the red/pink on the palm of your hands.

I agree with Jacqueline! You have to coordinate your blush with your lipstick and overall look. If I'm wearing a nude lip or lipgloss then I wear the blush in the picture because it's the color my body naturally turns when I turn red. So it's my go to blush. If I'm wearing a dark burgundy lip then I wear a dark red blush. With a purple lip I use a mauve-ish blush.

Omg thank you Ms J!
your explanation helps me understand it so much better. now I can't wait to pair my new blush with my many plum/violet lipsticks that I have.

@ Paola...I'm glad someone else feels my pain lol
Hopefully we will both learn from this post.

For your blush to be natural looking, you want to pick a blush that is going to mimic the color your cheeks turn when you blush. Cream blushes will give you a more dewy finish where powders will be more matte. I would suggest going in front of a mirror and pinching your cheeks. You will see that they turn a shade of pink, and that there is the color of blush you should get! As for color matching, it kinda hard to explain but basically if I am doing an eye look that is more natural, and uses brown shades I like using a warm more peachy toned blush because it will pull the whole look together with the equal amounts of warmth. And if I am doing an eye look that contains cooler colors such as a cool grey or purple or blue, I would use a cooler toned blush- something that has a blue undertone to it. But with all of this you need to think about your own skin tone and wether cool or warm looks best. And then for the lipstick, you can really do whatever you want. But sometimes warm eyes, with warm blush, with warm lips can be too much for the eyes to take in. You kinda just have to play around with lipsticks and see what you like the most! You can always wipe it off and try again:) just have fun with it! So if you got a violet blush it doesn't mean you have to use it only with violet eyes and lips! Violet can be fun as a blush because you can do any eye color natural or dramatic, warm or cool and it should balance it since violet can contain both a mixture of cool and warm undertones. Hope this helps:):)

I have decided that I am going to save Jacqueline's explanations on a word document for my reference from now on; truckloads of helpful tips in a technical format, too valuable to pass up) :-) Anyway, I don't know a whole lot but I love blush and I constantly wear them! I have olive-medium skintone and after reading Jackie's answer I noticed that most of my blushes are warm tone or neutral. I wear a lot of blue on my eyes and I pair them with oranges peachy shades like tarte tipsy! with heavy eyelook I tend to go with bronzy shades like Becca wild honey or song bird. and I have two nude type blush- Clinique fig pop and Bobbi Brown sand pink! when I absolutely don't have any clue I pick them. sometimes I like to wear really strong blush color like Becca hyacinth or Kevin Aucoin Myracle or tarte old 'flush'. in that case I arrangey other makeup accordingly- I tend to go for lined eyes with nice lashes and natural pinkier lips! one very important thing that I have learned is that I need to start slowly with any blushes! and then build it up! so the right brush is also very imp!

That's a great idea Aru to keep Ms J's comments in Word. Her knowledge is too valuable to pass up.

Thanks for sharing your tips too! I've learned a lot from this post
