Try making an appointment with a local, LICENSED makeup artist for a makeup lesson. Be careful about who you go to, be sure they are credentialed.
Aside from that, your brushes are just as important as the makeup you're using. Be sure you have some quality brushes. Sigma is a fav of mine, everyone loves Morphe and they have a great price point.
As far as the make up in your picture, I think if you had done a nice shimmery shade on your lid, and filled in your eyebrows, it would look great. Don't worry, we all start somewhere. I look back at the pictures from when I first started and I shudder, LOL!

I have a ulta store about 50 miles from here will they be score to show me?

They (ulta) would show you, but I recommend to go to sephora better. In my opinion they are more professional. I have seen muas at ulta using the same dirty brushes between clients.

Ok great I believe we have a sephora also.

Naturally I agree with everything Jaqqueline said, but I want to say one thing. It's less expensive to go to Sephora or Ulta, but please bear in mind that the makeup artists in salons are the ones with training and education, and most freelance ones. Nothing against the girls at those stores at all, please let me make that clear. But those stores hire girls without any training or experience and give them minimal training, mostly in sales. A makeup artist at a salon or a freelancer, take me for example. I've been to three makeup academies, one in New Orleans, one Dallas and one in Orlando. I studied under Danessa Myricks as well, and I also studied under Orlando Santiago. That makes a big difference at a makeup lesson. It may cost more (my fee is $60, compared to the $35 at Ulta) but you get what you pay for. I adore the girls at those stores, they help me out a lot with product knowledge. I just hate to see you want so bad to do your makeup correctly and you may happen to get someone new at the store or something, I don't know, I just want you to get the best education possible.

Great info ladies! I will say that Freelance mua's:for the brands are actual artist versus Retail brand people working for the line's. $60 for a lesson Kathryn? Wow that is so little in cost for a lesson. Did you go to seminars? or a actual makeup Academy school? Just been curious about it. :)

Alma I started out apprenticing for a makeup artist. Then I attended makeup academy in New Orleans and got my license. Then I apprenticed under Danessa Myricks in Dallas for a while. Then I worked for about a year, then I attended Orlando Santiago's advanced makeup academy in (ironically) Orlando. Both of those artists are well established in the industry, Orlando more so maybe, but Danessa has her own line called "I Make You Beautiful" and she does amazing work. Then I took a seminar in Houston by another industry artist. I've got on my schedule to go to the all day seminar/hands on workshop by Matin Maulawizada next month. I'm super excited about that, he's so accomplished... Artist to Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and more I don't feel like typing, (lol) he's regularly published in Vouge, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair... Just ALL kinds of amazing success. I can't wait to go. I'm also scheduled to take a one on one workshop with Jordan Liberty in Sept. I couldn't be more excited about that either! Fangirling!

I can only charge $60 for a lesson because I live in a tiny little Louisiana town. No one here could even a Magent paying $100 or more for any kind of make up service. Except for a bride. All the people in this town think $60 is high. I am one of the highest charging artist here. Most people charge $45 for most services.
